How to Stop Rain From Flooding Your Factory

Rain got into my factory, the pumps cannot pull all the water back out, and now water is in the way of every material line I have.

The loop you are stuck in

Water in Sandustry is a cycle, not a resource that sits still. Steam rises, reaches the sky, and comes back down as rain. That means a factory that boils water — burning slag over lava, running anything hot — is manufacturing its own weather.

When that rain lands on an open factory, two things go wrong at once: water gets into material lines where it does not belong, and the pumps you built to handle it turn out not to be able to clear it.

Fix the drainage first

Check for steam trapped in the pipe. This is the failure that looks like a broken pump but is not. Steam sitting inside a pipe blocks the water behind it. Pull the steam out with the grabber tool; the water then drains and the steam escapes.

Accept that pumps do not fully drain. Players consistently report the pumps cannot pull out all the water — there is always a residue. Design around it rather than adding more pumps: keep the machines that actually care about water contamination above the level water settles at.

Remember what pipes can and cannot carry. A pipe is only the conduit — you need a pump block to absorb and a vent block to eject. And in the demo build, pipes moved water only: lava could not be pumped, and steam could not either.

Then stop the rain landing on you

Draining is cleanup. The real fix is that rain should never reach the factory floor.

Build a slanted roof. The technique players recommend is a sloped roof over the factory, built so that steam moves away before it becomes rain. A flat roof traps steam against the underside; a slant gives it somewhere to go.

Use blocks to steer the steam. Steam has a habit of getting stuck in grotto ceilings, and there is no dedicated directional control for it — but solid blocks work. Players report that with enough care you can decide both where the steam travels and where the water eventually falls. Build the channel deliberately instead of letting steam find its own way.

Put the boiling somewhere else. If your slag pit is the thing generating steam, separating it from your sorting lines means the rain it produces lands somewhere that does not matter.
